Intervju Flatbush Zombies: om kommande samarbete med James Blake

Den amerikanska musikgruppen Flatbush Zombies, från just området Flatbush i New York, har varit sammansvetsade i snart tio år. De slog igenom med “Thug Waffle” som blev viral på YouTube, vilken följdes upp av deras debut-mixtape D.R.U.G.S. Idag känns gruppen ofta igen från populära singlar som “Bounce”, “New Phone, Who Dis?” och “Headstone”. Medlemmarna Erick Arc Elliott, Meechy Darko och Zombie Juice avslutade sommaren med den mörka singeln “Afterlife”. För produktionen stod ingen mindre än den hyllade producenten och artisten James Blake. I samband med releasen avslöjade Flatbush Zombies att singeln bara var ett första smakprov från ett större projekt – i samarbete med Blake. 

Singeln “Afterlife” anspelar på tron om ljust pånyttfödelse som finns inom många religioner, däribland hinduismen. På Flatbush Zombies hemsida kunde besökaren finna ett quote från Bhagavad Gita, en betydelsefull skrift för många hinduer. Det är även ett återkommande tema i den X-Ray inspirerade musikvideon, som är regisserad av Arnaud Bresson och inspelad i Paris. Flatbush Zombies senaste singel följer upp gruppens uppmärksammade EP now, more than ever. Projektet är en reaktion på det politiska klimat som världen befinner sig och tar avstamp i den senaste tidens antirasistiska demonstrationer till följd av polisens övervåld mot den svarta befolkningen. 

I väntan på det kommande projektet ställde vi några snabba frågor till medlemmarna – om den nya singeln “Afterlife” samt vad vi kan vänta oss från samarbetet med James Blake! 

DOPEST: On “Afterlife” you’ve worked with James Blake. You first met back in 2018 – tell us more about how the collaboration happened! 

Erick: “James and I started to talk to each other online after I heard him say he was a fan on a BBC Radio Interview. When we met in person things just clicked! In LA, we had some studio sessions and put some songs down. He came to Brooklyn for a week and I introduced him to Meech and Juice. We locked down in the studio and made some wonderful songs together!” 

This is the first material released from a series of recording session which will be a part of an upcoming project – how much can you tell us about that? 

Erick: “All I can say is that while ’Afterlife’ is one of my favorite songs we’ve done together, there is a handful of other tracks that are insanely good as well”

Have you been co-producing on the upcoming project, since you usually handle most of the production?

Erick: “Yes. James is handling most of the production but Dominic from Mount Kimbie and myself have also played a part in the production as well. Excited for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on!” 

The process of collaboration with James Blake has been going on since 2018, tell us about the journey and how it has affected your sound? Do you notice a difference in sound if you compare the first song you recorded on the project – to the last one? 

Meech: “It has been a journey to say the least. I’ve noticed a difference in how I hear music. I have honestly been spoiled my whole career as far as production goes. I don’t think there’s much people on this planet left that are of the cloth Erick and James are from musically. So to be in the room with both of them and have the opportunity to freely express myself and create is unmatched.” 

Earlier this year you dropped the EP now, more than ever which shines light on social injustice as a reflection of the events going on in the world right now. What impact do you wish for the EP to have? 

Meech: “I wish for it to do whatever it is meant to do … it’s art. Let the universe guide it to its destination.”
