Intervju Tion Wayne: om singeln "I Dunno" & samarbetet med Stormzy & Dutchavelli

"Now that the song is out, there’s gonna be a new wave”

“Drip like my chain, shake that ass, it’s insane / Very sexy, Keisha, Becky”.

Nu finns det många unga artister on the come-up berättar Tion.

“I actually learned how to play the guitar while I was in there” säger Tion.

DOPEST: You just dropped your latest single “I Dunno” which is REALLY blowing up. And not only in the UK, but in Sweden as well. Tell me a little more about the singel!

TION WAYNE: “I feel like this is my biggest single to date …  So, I was in the studio one day and when I’m in the studio I don’t normally write I just go in the booth. I don’t even put the words in I just mumble stuff, you know? Like, I’m just thinking about my own personal experiences that I’ve been through in the past …  I was thinking about how many times that I’ve known the answer – but I can’t say it or I don’t want to say it. I was thinking like, I really need to say ‘I dunno’ because people say ‘I dunno’ every single day. So I was like, yeah, I gotta put this on the hook – and it really roll on people’s tongues!”

You’ve also featured two heavy-hitters from the UK scene – Dutchavelli and Stormzy. How did that happen?

“I knew Dutchavelli from before. I had met him, but we had never worked together. Actually me and him shot the video together. And while I was editing the video, I think I was editing with the director, Stormzy overheard the song over the phone. I was like, let me call him to see if he wants to jump on a remix. So I called Stormzy, but he said: ‘Nah bro … I wanna be on the original!’’ *laughing* I had already spent so much money on the video but I was like, if Stormzy wanna jump on the original – I’ll just have to shoot another one”

Usually spring/summer is a pretty busy season for artist with a lot of festivals, touring and shows going on. Do you feel like this collab would have happened if it wasn’t for Covid-19?

“If It wasn’t for corona this line-up probably wouldn’t have existed. Stormzy would have been on tour and I would have been doing shows, but because of corona we were just at home. I feel like this is a good time for everyone to master their crafts and just work on themselves until the lockdown is over”

Which producers did you work with on the track?

“AoD and The Elements. AoD, he added a sick guitar. He just put that guitar and flipped it into a drill beat like that. I feel like it’s the first drill song that got that guitar going through like that. And The Elements, they’re not even from London, they’re from Germany. But they’ve been working a lot in the UK and because of the lockdown they haven’t been able to get back home. I don’t really know them but they bring a fresh sound to this genre and that’s why I decided to run with that beat. I feel like everyone’s gonna copy that sound. Now that the song is out, there’s gonna be a new wave.”

One line that’s really stuck in my head after listening to the song is: “Should I cuff Ms Banks / Give her babies”. Well, that would be a dope collaboration I’m not gonna lie … *laughing*

“Yeah, yeah, yeah! We’re definitely gonna do something this year. We need to give them [the fans reds anm.] a love story or something *laughing* We’re gonna do something – a 100 % Hopefully we’ll get time this year.”

It seems like you’ve got a lot planned, I just found a recent Tweet of yours where you said: “I got another hit btw remember this tweet“. It sounds quiet cryptical, what does it mean?

“I’ve got another tune that I’ve made recently. And I feel like it’s another crazy one, you know. It’s another huge collaboration …  But I can’t give it away just yet. Hopefully we can release it soon.”

Speaking of new music, are we finally getting a debut album from you this year?

“Well …  I’m looking to drop an album maaaybe the start of next year. That’s the plan!”

Hopefully the lockdown will be over by then! And maaaybe you’ll be able to play it live on show here in Sweden?

“Yeah, I love Sweden, I’ve been there once before and I can’t wait to come out there again. I appreciate the love that I get from there and I always see a lot of Swedish supporters on my Instagram. I actually can’t wait to do a big show out there!”
